Macau University of Science and Technology is committed to provide excellent learning environment to enhance the learning experience of students. Therefore, the University establishes channels, mechanisms and guidelines for students to inquire, complain or appeal for issues of their concerns to relevant units in the University. Students can communicate regularly with their class mentors or academic mentors on topics or issues concerned. Representatives of student groups are invited to participate regularly in university-level and faculty-level meetings. The University also provides psychological counseling services to students as well as counseling on their campus life. Faculties and departments regularly hold seminars and workshops on different topics for students to promote communication and exchanges between teachers and students.
In order to communicate more effectively as well as to collect students' opinions and suggestions on teaching, research, campus facility services and management, the University will use the WeMust, teacher-student consultation meetings, mentorship system to collect useful information. The data and comments will then be integrated and analyzed with the aim to improve the overall teaching quality as well as student services in the University.
For ensuring students’ rights, students may query, appeal or complain against related affairs. When students raise their concerns to the University, it is best practice to ensure a thorough understanding of the mechanism and procedures. Moreover, students should make real-name complaint or appeal honestly with supporting evidence. Anonymous complaints or enquiries will not be handled or replied. Complaints filed with false evidence will be considered invalid. The University reserves the right to invoke its student disciplinary procedures in respect of the student’s misconduct.
Two types of complaints:
Appeals of academic study results: Students may file an appeal if they believe their learning assessment results are unreasonable.
Complaints about other affairs: Students may submit complaints against faculties/Department of General Education, administrative affairs, academic support, student associations, academic integrity and student discipline.
1. Appeals of academic study results:
Students who want to file an appeal against the learning assessment results must submit their applications within 10 working days after the assessment results are announced. A duly completed “Application for Academic Appeal” together with an application fee has to be submitted to the respective Faculty/Department of General Education. Late applications will not be handled. The University may make announcements for any special arrangements. It normally takes around 20 working days for the processing of the appeal application, starting from the submission date of all the documents mentioned above. The specific timeline for the processing of the appeal might depend on the actual situation. The application fee is refundable when changes are made to the grades after a review of the appeal.
2. Complaints about other affairs:
Matters with Faculties/Department of General Education – Matters related to teaching, administration, and support, etc. of a faculty/department should follow the internal guidelines of the respective unit. Students may file a complaint to the respective unit.
Administrative affairs/Academic support – Students can file complaints to the respective administrative or academic support units.
Student Associations – Complaints can be filed to the Academic Support Unit that is in charge of supervising student associations (Student Affairs Office).
Academic integrity – Consultation with teachers should be made if students have queries about academic integrity or plagiarism; if students suspect other students have violated academic integrity, they can file a complaint to the respective faculty/department. The respective faculty/department will gather relevant information and form a faculty-level committee for investigation and deliberation. If students have objections to the results, they should submit the appeal within the designated period. Such appeals will be sent to the Student Academic Integrity Committee of the University for deliberation.
Student discipline – Complaints can be filed to the Academic Support Unit that is in charge of student discipline and awards (Student Affairs Office) for students’ misbehavior. Severe cases will be followed up by the Student Discipline and Awards Committee.
